Kulturkampanjen was created in 2003 after an occupation of the old SVT (Swedish Television) house on Östermalm. This action started off years of meetings at city hall that led to nothing. Kulturkampanjen’s solution to the problem was to build their own house in true DIY spirit. The goal was to create a libertarian self-organized cultural centre where the distance between visions and doing would be short. After one year of preparations with permits, the building begun in spring 2005. The house was financed through solidarity donations and a few grants, it was designed and build by ourselves. The house was almost ready at the grand opening in September 2007 and was built by steel containers and collage-like gables made up of found windows. One large round window above the entrance gave the house its name, the Cyclops. Despite low standard such as no electricity, water, drainage and heating the house had approximately 1000 visitors a month during the summer of 2008.
Theater performances, artist studio work, shows for young people, club nights and film showings are some of the activities that filled the Cyclops. Together with Konstfack (Art school) we also run workshops that amongst other things led to a table being sent to the furniture show in Milan, Italy.
The house was located in the Stockholm suburb of Högdalen, below the Högdals hills, was approx. 300 square meters and 9 meters high.
